Pottery Taster Session

£15 each. Up to 30 minutes varies depending on person.

Fantastic for people who have always wanted to try pottery wheel-throwing, this is a chance for anyone to experience throwing a clay pot in a relaxed and fun environment. It is also a great starting point for people to decide if they wish to delve into pottery more before booking a longer course. This is a make-and-take session* and does not include firing as often people are only here for a short time. Firing will soon be available for any first-time masterpieces at an additional charge.

In the taster session you will create your own pottery vessel with instruction from our resident potter, Angela, who has been a trained ceramicist for over 20 years and has run many workshops for all ages and abilities.

Come and have a go at pottery wheel-throwing in St. Ives and be part of the great tradition of St. Ives Potters. Great for individuals or groups and for anyone that has ever wanted to try their hand at wheel-thrown pottery. Your session will focus on learning the fundamentals of wheel-throwing on a vintage electric wheel including centering the clay, hand positions, forming it into a pot and the different tools that you can use. You will watch a demonstration first, then be guided through making your own creation until you have a pot you are happy with.

The classes cater for any skill level and are tailored to suit different ages. We have taught people from 2 – 75 so far (and all ages in between) and everyone has created a viable pot. These are make-and-take sessions so your pot does not get fired but can be air-dried and wrapped for safe transportation. If painted and varnished it can be used for display purposes or you can find somewhere to have it fired at home. This is because the clay takes a couple of weeks to dry fully. Sessions last for as long as it takes for everyone to make a pot they’re happy with, which is normally around 20 minutes per person.

A amazing first time on the potters wheel from a taster session.

*It is best for the pot to be left to dry for at least 24 hours/overnight before we wrap it for travel. If you are only visiting for a day or afternoon, with prior warning or at quieter times, we may be able to speed this up, please let us know in advance if this might be the case.
